چکیده

We give a brief summary of the Gottfried sum rule and a flavor asymmetric distribution ¯ u− ¯ d in the nucleon. First, experimental history of the sum-rule studies is discussed. Second, future prospects for studying the asymmetry at Fermilab and RHIC are discussed. We also comment on possible nuclear modification.

Flavor asymmetry is investigated in polarized light-antiquark distributions by a meson-cloud model. In particular, ρ meson contributions to ∆ū−∆d̄ are calculated. We point out that the g2 part of ρ contributes to the structure function g1 of the proton in addition to the ordinary longitudinally polarized distributions in ρ. This kind of contribution becomes important at medium x (> 0.2) with sma...

Phenomenology of the Flavor–Asymmetry in the Light–Quark Sea of the Nucleon

A phenomenological ansatz for the flavor–asymmetry of the light sea distributions of the nucleon, based on the Pauli exclusion principle, is proposed. This ansatz is compatible with the measured flavor–asymmetry of the unpolarized sea distributions, d̄ > ū, of the nucleon. A prediction for the corresponding polarized flavor–asymmetry is presented and shown to agree with predictions of (chiral qu...

We study the d̄ ū asymmetry of the proton in a model approach recently developed, in which hadronic fluctuations of the nucleon are generated through gluon splitting and recombination mechanisms. Within this framework, it is shown that both d̄/ū and d̄− ū distributions in the proton can be consistently described by including only nucleon fluctuations to |πN〉 and |π∆〉 bound states. Predictions of t...

Omega Meson Cloud and the Proton’s Light Anti-Quark Distributions

We use the meson cloud model of the nucleon to calculate distribution functions for (d̄− ū) and d̄/ū in the proton. Including the effect of the omega meson cloud, with a coupling constant g ω/4π ≈ 8, allows a reasonably good description of the data. There has been considerable interest in the flavor dependence of the proton’s quark distributions. About ten years ago, the NMC measurement of the in...
